um...you don't "connect" to an IP address. You connect to the computer, equipment ie router, switch port, DMZ host, etc. But you are correct with the DNS process, the Domain Name System(DNS) Resolves IP address to Fully Qualified Domain Names(FQDN) http://www.Name.com, not just http://name.com. This means. Here is a little secret, if you want to get the IP address of a website, such as www.microsoft.com, under windows, go into the command prompt shell, do this by
Start-Run-"CMD". This will bring up a DOS style screen. Then Ping the web address without the "HTTP", or "WWW."
So "Ping microsoft.com " or "Ping google.com"

This will send back a ICMP Packet with the web address IP address off of port 80. Then If you wanted to you can just type the IP address in the address box, like Http://(IP address).com Either way does the same thing, but sometimes you get a web address that is not in any DNS table and you HAVE to type the IP in the address box.

just type in your browsers address bar:

ftp:// (put the address of the ftp site here without brackets)

u could just use the command prompt and type

ftp (address here)
dir
then use commands like get and put to retrieve and upload files.
