I'm 15, and i'm not fat but i could be in better shape. I'm 140 pounds, but don't look it at all, my doctor told me it was all muscle, since i play soccer in the fall. I was wondering how long a 15 year old should workout to become in shape, outside of soccer season. (Most of wanting to get in shape is in fact, getting in shape for soccer.)
:] you guys have been such help!
thank you.

Hi Sarah. The best thing to do is to ask your doctor or coach this question. Generally the rule is for an hour a day every other day and more only if you are otherwise pretty inactive. You just need to get your heart rate up and hold it there for 10 to 15 minutes. Running should be only a small part and just to keep from stiffening in that area. Too much running can cause terrible problems with arthritis later in life - especially for women. Make sure you drink your milk. Ice cream and cheese are not substitutes.

I have always been told to begin with half an hour and slowly increase my workout time to an hour but not more than that or at most 1 hour and 15 mins. It should be daily if possible if not at least 4-5 times a week.

Presumably your coach gave you an off season workout plan. Every coach I know does that. What did that say?
If you threw it away or lost it, the essence of what it will say is do a lot of running. At least an hour a day. Mix up steady distance with tempo runs and track intervals (100's, 200's, 400's) on alternate days. If your legs get too sore, substitute biking for a day or two.

At least 20-30 minutes of elevated heart beat is a good enough workout. Do this 5 times a week, or at least 3. You gotta get your heart pumping....walking like a zombie isn't going to accomplish that. You don't have to go all out either.
Simple example exercise....
1) stretch and warm up doing jumping jacks for a minute or two.
2) Jog, run, power walk or use a combination of them for 20-30 minutes.
3) Cool down. You do this by slow walking followed by stretching and/or rubbing out any sore spots of the body.

Eat only when hungry and that too not more thrice a day. Nothing in between meals apart from water. It will be easier to stick to regime, if u chew ever morsel of food at least 32 times so that ur body system generates signals when u r hungry/full. Include plenty of uncooked vegetables and fruits in each meal.
Take light exercises and brisk walks every day preferably twice daily.
U will achieve what u have not even dreamt of in a reasonable time.

Mutiple sprints each and every of ways. Burns far extra energy, speedier! Plus it would not consume into muscle as much as a 4 mile jog could. meaning sprints are additionally extra powerful on your metobolism then a 4 mile jog. long distance working has 0 reward. except you like the boredom.
