There's a lot of good scientific research to back up this idea. Everybody has a great memory capacity, the trick is to organize it, use it, and access it. In a way it's just like lloking for a file on a computer.
When you see/hear/read something once it has (on average) about a 30% chance of going into your long-term memory, which is your brain's equivalent of the hard drive on the computer. Otherwise, your brain tends to dump it in 12 hours or less.
The trick, then, is to review all daily class material every single afternoon/evening. This doesn't have to be a long process. Just the fact of seeing/hearing/reading the same information twice WITHIN 12 HOURS raises the chance of it going into your long term memory to 70% or better.
Without that, you get that familiar feeling when studying for a test that "I don't remember seeing any of this before!"
So: review every afternoon/evening what was covered that day.
As for what time of day to do special studying for a test: only you can answer that question. Everyone's body and brain move in different cycles and rhythms. Try out different times until you find the one that works best for YOU.
My advice for a major exam would be that you stop studying when you go to bed the night before the exam. Too often I've seen students try to do a last-minute cram before heading into the exam room and then have a panic attack because they trip over one little detail that they didn't remember!
The other two pieces of advice for major tests and exams are even more simple: [1] LOTS OF SLEEP. [2] EAT A GOOD BREAKFAST. Your brain simply cannot work properly if you don't rest it and feed it.
PS I'm a teacher, if you hadn't guessed already!

I used to be the same way, and I would get good grades for some reason. lol
I study really early in the morning like at 5am and when I get to school I go and take a test, but still, it made me very unconfident and sometimes I would break out, it all depends how much you know about it.
Now I finally learned how to study, I study a couple days earlier before the test, even though it's really hard for me to do that because I get disconcentraded, but I study little by little each day and I review for it every step. Then when the day comes, I still wake up at 5am to make a review of all the stuff I've studied for.
Good luck! And im only in 8th grade, so go figure.. you'll get better at it when you grow older and older.

When you go home you should eat and relax for a few minutes then do any homework that you have or start knicking away at long term projects or papers so you don't have to do them all at once. Then after that do something fun for a while before studying. I recommend studying at about 7:00pm and then until you go to bed to read. Its a proven fact that if you study late at night, you're able to recall the facts easier and with better accuracy.
If you're in college or even high school, the basic rule of thumb is to study 1-3 hours for every hour in class (but it can be less if you study often and remember things easily.) Good luck!

I would say rather spend more time studding, even if it is right true the night more in advance, 1stly most people long turn memory is better, and it is also good to be well rested when writing tests and exams. You should get to bed early when you are writing the next day, and do some exercise so your brain can get more oxygen to focus.
but, 1st I am wondering why your class mates may not see you studing.

The best time for studying is after dinner and BEFORE any recreational activity such as TV of phone time. Never let your study time rob you of your sleep because your performance and recall depend on being well rested. Study the night before- lightly review just before a test to jog your memory.

The best time is from 3 am as it is quite and the mind is at peace and stable.
But then there are individual conveniences and preferences always and it is not hard and fast for all the people the same timings.
