Indira Priyadharshini Nehru born on November 19, 1917 to Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru and Kamala Nehru (from a Kashmini Brahmin family.) She loved and married a Parsi named Feroze Gandhi in 1942. Feroze Khan was a Parsi Muslim and son of the family grocer. Indira changed her religion, became a Muslim woman and married Feroze Khan in a London mosque.

Nehru and Kamala Nehru were not happy; Kamala was on deathbed. The news of this marriage eventually reached Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. Gandhi called Nehru and practically ordered him to ask the young-man to change his name from Khan to Gandhi. It had nothing to do with change of religion, from Islam to Hinduism for instance. It was just a case of a change of name by an affidavit. M.K. Gandhi unofficially adoped Feroze as his son for this purpose and so Feroze Khan became Feroze Gandhi. When Feroze and Indira returned to India, a mock 'Vedic marriage' was instituted for public consumption. Publicly, however, both Jawaharlal Nehru and Mahatma Gandhi strenuously defended the marriage.

This is the Story of Indira Nehru becoming Indira Gandhi...
