The Catholic Church already stand opposed to IVF for just this reason- among others.
IVF is the mere manufacture of children. It takes God and love completely out of the creation of a child and reduces children to consumer goods for sale.
IVF results in "snowflake babies-" LIVING CHILDREN put on ice until their parents decide if they want to let them be born or not.....child abuse if I ever heard of it!
And if they decide NOT to have more children and just let the embryos ( babies) thaw...that is absolutely no different than an abortion. An abortion is the conception of a child who is then deliberately killed because it's parents don't want it.

This is the whole crux of the Pope's argument against IVF. It is precisely because some of the embryos are not allowed to live, if you like to put it that way. For this reason, it is amazing that he has received the McCanns

I agree with the Church.
Catholics believe that life is a sacred gift from God and needs to be treated with all human dignity from the moment of conception to the point of natural death.
The Catholic Church is not just against kidnapping and murder, it is pro-life in the widest sense. This is often called a "Consistent Ethic of Life."
This pro-life stance stresses the highest regard for dignity of human life including that of:
+ All people in objecting to unjust war and nuclear arms.
+ The unborn in objecting to to abortion, in vitro fertilization, frozen embryos, embryonic stem cell research, and cloning
+ The elderly, sick and dying in objecting to assisted suicide and euthanasia
+ Prisoners in objecting to the death penalty
+ The poor and minorities in supporting social justice issues.
http://www.usccb.org/catechism/text/pt3sect2chpt2art5.htm#2270
+ In Vitro Fertilization +
Catholics and many other Christians believe that a soul is placed in a human at the point of conception. This is why the Church celebrates on March 25 the feast of the Annunciation when Mary said "Yes!" to God and Jesus was conceived. Life is sacred and a gift from God.
In most in vitro fertilizations, more than one egg is fertilized. Several embryos are then placed into the mother's womb. The remaining embryos are either destroyed or frozen. Destroying human embryos is abortion and freezing them with an unknown future hope of ever being born is not respecting the dignity of human life.
Later if and when the embryos begin to grow in the mother, all but one or two are usually aborted, again killing sacred human life.
With love in Christ.

i believe that the head of the church in scotland is just comparing the lost lives through abortion to the lost child, who is Madeleine.
think of all the millions of children that have been lost!! i know that comparing it to a case like Madeleine's must get real sensitive responses, but can you not make the comparison?
by the way, i do believe that the church is against ivf.
again, i want to say that i know that comparing abortion to Madeleine's case may cause real emotional responses, but things need to be said to stop the killing of the little, vulnerable unborn babies. people need to realize that life is precious.

I don't see what the big deal is. I'm Catholic and pro-life. The only thing the bishop said was that it's the same kind of tragedy as losing an unborn child to abortion, which is true.

I am for pro choice and fail to see how the two cases are related .
Another one using the publicity that the McCann's have generated . I seriously find it ridiculous that The head of the Catholic Church in Scotland has compared abortion to the abduction of Madeleine McCann.

I am sure the parents are quite aware of this and ok with it. I am pro life and yes life is precious I totally agree. The only thing I see in common here is if you are going to get pregnant then be responsible for what you created. Abortion is used more often for lack of responsiblilty and no using protection then it is for cases of rape and having children, taking them on vacation and leaving them in a hotel room lacks responsibility as well. That is the only way I see these 2 things being related..if you dont want kids to interupt your life then use birthcontrol, dont have sex or give them up to families that desperately want to be loving responsible parents.

I dont see what one has to do with the other....
The McCanns may not be happy about this...
This is the cardinal and not the Pope I would be very angry to find out my childs abduction has benn used to further the Churchs agenda....
Also what about comparing the level of sexual abuse within the church to thepeodophilia in wider society and why doesnt he campaign about that..

The two are not related whatsoever. I am pro choice with abortion.
