Orcs and elfs? That sounds like J.R.R. Tolkien: "The Hobbit", "The Lord of the Rings" Trilogy. But it is not in the Middle Ages.

In "Dracula" by Bram Stoker, a man goes on an adventure and gets bitten by a vampire, but that was not in the Middle Ages either.

Sorry, I am just not too familiar with books with medieval settings. Hope someone can help.

The Eye of the World by Robert Jordan (The Wheel of Time series book 1)

There are orcs (They're called Trollocs in this series) and it's set in a time of swords and sorcery.

"The Wheel of Time turns, and Ages come and pass, leaving memories that become legend. Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave it birth comes again. In one Age, called the Third Age by some, an Age yet to come, an Age long past, a wind rose.... The wind was not the beginning. There are neither beginnings nor endings to the turning of the Wheel of time.
But it was a beginning."

I agree with harridan about Dracula and The Hobbit or The Lord of the Rings.

As a medieval book I would suggest "The Iron Lance" by Stephen Lawhead. It is about a guy who follows his father who is going on a crusade through Europe to Jerusalem in the 11th century.

The Hobbit, by J.R.R.Tolkien, if you haven't already read it. It's pretty much exactly what you said, except it's a hobbit that goes on the adventure, and he either rns into, or gets bitten by a giant spider!
