M.D. means Medical Doctor

In some countries physicians study for a Bachelor or Master level degree in medicine (MBBS), but in the USA all physicians have received a Doctorate from a four year graduate medical program.

Most receive the Doctor of Medicine (MD), but some physicians follow a very similar but slightly different curriculum and receive a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO). The two degrees are considered equivalent. Dentists and some other health professionals also receive Doctorates.

Doctor of Medicine (M.D. or MD, from the Latin Medicinae Doctor meaning "Teacher of Medicine,") is an academic degree for medical doctors. It varies between countries, from being a first professional degree, to being a relatively rare higher doctoral academic research degree.
