Well that's the problem. Most laptops are not designed to be put on your lap they are meant to be placed on a flat surface like a table or desk as to allow proper ventilation. Kind of ironic. There are laptop cooling stands you can purchase that do help some.

Your laptop probably has a lot of dust inside of it. If you keep your laptop running a lot you should get a can of air and blow out the dust from inside of it. If it only gets hot when it is on your lap you are probably blocking the airvents. Laptops do much better on hard surfaces where they can get good air flow. Intake vents are sometimes on the bottom of the laptop. Some research has been done on the effects of using laptops on a person's lap since they kick out a lot of heat and EMF. These things applied to certain parts of the body are not good for people who want to have children according to some research.

Contrary to their name, a laptop is not really designed to be sat on a lap. It should be sat on a solid flat surface like a desk.
The processors and batteries DO get hot in these units, so if you MUST use it on your lap, get a lap tray (with a beanbag type underside) and sit laptop on that.

Most laptops require air circulation under the computer to maintain proper cooling. Either use a "lap desk", or a small board under the computer when working on your lap.

Hey, check this out for possible recalls. I remember one of my laptaps (an HP) had a recall but mine wasn't the model they were worried about. It was something about overheating.
Hewlett-Packard is recalling almost 16,000 notebook batteries worldwide after reports of the devices overheating and burning, according to a report released Thursday by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.
This battery recall comes six months after HP and the safety commission announced one involving 135,000 battery units worldwide. HP, however, is hardly alone in facing battery recalls--computer makers such as Dell and Apple Computer have announced similar problems.
In HP's most recent case, batteries beginning with the bar code L3 are affected and may be found in HP and Compaq notebooks. HP Pavilion family notebooks with model numbers dv1xxx, ze2xxx, as well as HP Compaq family notebooks with model number nx48xx, may be affected. Compaq Presario models V2xxx and M2xxx may also be affected, according to the U.S. Consumer Product report. Good luck.

Perhaps the ventilation is not well.
The laptop is not really for the lap. It is not good if you'll place it on your lap for long durations.

If its on your lap, your legs could be blocking the air intake vent, it needs to circulate air to keep the inside cool

It may be the battery. Many companies recalled their batteries due to overheating. Call the manufacturer & find out if this is the problem with yours.
