This is one method which some wireless owners are using to keep unauthorized people out. If you don't know the name you simply can't connect. So to connect you have to know the name and the network key. Basically, if it isn't your system you can't connect or the system adminstrator will have to tell you the SSID.

Now, someone who really wants in can attempt to sniff the packets to discover that ID, but if the packets are encoded that won't work. The chances are very high that someone who turns off the SSID broadcast has also inabled an encoding theme or is using radius validation all to keep people out who don't belong.
