Without one, how on earth can you connect to the internet ?

First off, you must have an IP (Internet Protocol) address to access the Internet. To obtain an IP address, you must attach to some sort of network - one that is connected to the Internet.

Sorry to say, you cannot just attach to a digital cable running in front of your house and be off surfing the web. However, if your neighbor has cable Internet or DSL along with a wireless router, you may be able to attach to his “LAN” (local area network), acquire an IP address from his router and start surfin’ the net.

Wireless! It’s a great way to gain free access to the Internet thanks to people that haven’t a clue. :)
