He was a failure at school and university, he worked as a medoica picture postcard painter, odd job and even begged on the streets.

He was actually a Company Messenger in WW1 not a medic, his job was to carry messages from his officer in the front lines back to headquarters in the rear lines and vice-versa, he was wounded twice by shrapnel and once by gas.

His awards were:

Prussian 1914 Iron Cross I Class,
Prussian 1914 Iron Cross II Class,
Bavarian Military Merit Cross with swords III Class, and Prussian Wound Badge in Black.

There is no doubt he showed courage while serving with a Bavarian Regiment (Ist Company of the 16th Bavarian Reserve Infantry, known as the List Regiment after its Colonel List.) in WW1, recooperating from wounds, caused by shrapnel and gas gave him time to develop his sick theories as to who was responsible for bring Germany down, he blamed the Communists and the Jewish people.

Strangely enough, the Lieutenant called Gutmann who recommended him for the Iron Cross I Class, was Jewish.

For about 6 years (approximately 1907-13) he painted and made and sold postcards in Vienna, but this wasn't much of a job. Then, he was a soldier for the German military in WW1 where he was more or less a runner boy who would deliver messages. He actually won an Iron Cross for this. Then, he was one of the original members of the NDSAP (or something with those letters) which later was shortened to Nazi Party. Then, he was in jail for about a year for trying to overthrow the government at the Munich Beer Hall Pustch (failed miserably) and he was an author. During his jailtime, he wrote Mein Kampf. When he was realeased, he worked full time making speeches, rallies, etc. as the leader of the Nazi party (who still was not in power). In 1933 he became Chancellor of Germany, then merged the role of President and Chancellor into one job, assumed the role of Dictator and held this position until he killed himself in the spring of 1945. In short, he never really held much of a typical job for a long period time (as long as you don't consider dictator a typical job.)

Note On School:
He didn't fail school and university because he was not smart. He failed school because he father forced him to go to a common school and not a specific school of his choice. He was actually VERY smart but arrogant. He wanted to be the 'Upper' class and not the lower or middle class. He literally intentionally failed school in order to be sent to his school of choice.
I am not even sure if he did go to university. In order for him to go to University he had to finish, what we would call highs school, school.

He was a failed art student and an ambulance Corpsman (WWI in the Austrian army)--highly decorated. Other than that, he relied on wealthy industrialists to support him and then gradually rose to chancellor of Germany.
