By being kind to others.
Also by being reflective and choosing your path, not dwelling on past unhappiness at all, and getting older! When you get older, you don't worry about questions like this anymore. You have lived long enough and hopefully you have gotten involved in life and not been passive and watching others but have an important role in others' lives. So you have been too busy to really worry about questions like this for a while, and then when you put your head up from the daily grind and think about questions like this briefly, you realize you are happy and involved and enjoying your life, for the most part.
True happiness is contentment that you have done the best you could with what talents and gifts you have been given.

Hi!
This is your first question and the answers that have come so far seem either dismissive or inadequate.
Let me try a better answer and hope you would find it satsfying.
True happiness must be the kind that does not get disturbed by events happening all around us in our own life. The best way therefore to achieve true happiness is to identify, one by one, the things that disturb our peace of mind and try to avoid them or remove them from our life. As we keep reducing unhappy events in our life, our level and duration of happiness will keep increasing. That is all we can do, because there is nothing that we can have which will give us happiness all the time... even success when repeated several times, loses its power to give us happiness any more, because we begin to take it for granted. Gradual reduction or removal of various causes of unhappiness is the most practical formula.
However, it is not at all easy beyond a limit.... after a while, it dawns on us that the prime cause of our happiness is our own ego and selfish desires. It requires a lot of discipline and determination to address this problem. In order to reduce my ego, I call myself 'small' here to remind me all the time how minuscule I am in the context of this huge universe and its vast timespan. But to tell you frankly, it is extremely difficult to keep our own ego in check... but it is certainly possible to inculcate a sense of humility which is the best option for us to be able to accept all events without egoist reactions which disturb our peace of mind.
Absolute happiness is only a concept which can not exist in reality... but maximising our happiness is to a great extent possible through humility and discipline.
