Where is the best place to live in Virginia? We were thinking about moving to the Norfolk area.

Bear in mind that the Norfolk area is a big area and there is a very large military presence around here. Traffic is terrible, particularly when a ship docks or an airwing lands. Certain areas of Norfolk are nice, but there are some pretty bad areas, rundown and high crime. You didn't mention whether or not you had kids, but the school systems are nothing to get excited about. Also, salaries in this area are not equivalent to the cost of living so depending on what part of the country you are coming from, you might be shocked.
Personally, I would stay away from the Norfolk area. If you or any member of your family is military, you want to check on areas to live on that side of the water, but if not, the traffic through the tunnel is mindboggling. I would aim for the Peninsula (Yorktown; Williamsburg) or the Chesapeake area before choosing Norfolk. I haven't been to the mountains area of Virginia, but have heard it's very nice.
Best of luck to you wherever you should choose!

I have relatives in the Richmond area and in the Norfolk/Virginia Beach area. They all like where they live. The cost of living in Richmond is about half of the cost in Norfolk.

If you like the ocean, Norfolk is good. I personally favor the mountains, either Charlottesville (if you like a college town that is a bit on the pricey side) or Lynchburg (if you like a college town that is off the beaten track). Most people go to Virginia Beach for the ocean, or else down to Myrtle Beach.

I've read that Loudoun and Fairfax counties are the best places to live in Virginia. They're wealthy, safe, and full of facilities. Besides, you're near America's capital. Avoid Arlington and Alexandria; or at least don't stay there for long.
