Developed from the Delta Blues and Rhythm and Blues, seperating itself from Jazz by becoming Guitar oriented. Due to the Crossroads mythology, the public had a hard time allowing it at first, calling it the "Devil's Music." The Genre would end up fusing with nearly every other form of music making it the driving force for the next 50 years. Rock & Roll has certainly had an Angel watching over it!

Origionally, it was the genre that was the fusion of jazz, country and bluegrass that Elvis "created"
That't my american txbooks's definition.
I personally identify rock as music that has a strong back beat by the drums and is revolved around either the guitars, bass, drums or flutes. Rock is such a huge genre, it's hard to define. it's hard to bunch Simon and Garfunkel as the same genre of Opeth, but it happens since folk/classic rock and death metal are both genres of rock.
