Hi, I live in Melton which is 40 minutes west of Melbourne. We may have a small town but we are famous for the dejiwarrah festival which happens around early November and there are rides and games and parades for all to enjoy :)

I have family living in Yarraville which is very close to the city and they all live in houses- quite cheaply though I couldn't tell you the rents.
Also have family living in Mount Waverley which is more expensive, less good transport links, and I think is a long way from the city.
I agree with previous answer that the west of Melbourne, esp Williamstown, is close to the beach, Altona a little further out.
Toorak and Richmond are trendy but expensive.
St Kilda is still rough in places, but very close to the beach and the city.
Good luck- Melbourne is a great place to live!!!

It really depends on what you're willing to spend and what kind of lifestyle youre after. There are nice cheap places close by, but it also depends whether you're going to spend majority of your time on public transport or travelling by car. Personally I love my side of Melbourne so I'd suggest anywhere from kensington, newport, williamstown, maribyrnong, altona/altona meadows.
They're all fairly close to the city, about 15-25 minutes drive over the Westgate, peak traffic you'd probably be looking at about 30-45 minutes depending, but you learn the quickest routes. The prices are going to range, depending on how many bedrooms you want, so i suggest looking them up yourself.
Another reason would be public transport is easily accessable. Being in Altona it takes around 30 minutes to get to the city by train. Maribyrnong has Highpoint with everything you need, from supermarkets to chemists, funky little botiques to the cheaper clothing stores. You can take a tram straight from Maribyrnong into the city, considering the nearest station is Footscray, which is only a single tram away and about 15 minutes.
Melbournes public transport system is a little less than reliable but you learn to deal. Trams, trains and buses are all helpful in getting where ever you need to go. There's a website which helps you determine how to get where you're going, and how long it'll take, which can be helpful for first timers. www.metlinkmelbourne.com.au might be a good idea to check it out when looking at property, though i doubt it'd be a defining point in choosing where to live.

Sorry love, left Melbourne in 1980 and returned in 2006 for a visit - can tell you Prahran Market is still wonderful and improved. Loved living in that area. Close to the City on the 72 tram, Camberwell, Malvern, Toorak or St Kilda tram/train lines and 'burbs are still good.

Have you tried http://www.whereis.com.au ? Type in the suburb and you get a map showing you where it is. Zoom in or out to find how it relates to the city or other places of interest. If you are using the real estate sites, use whereis as well.
