It is possible to put a virus on a PDF, although it will only affect your computer if you open it using Adobe Acrobat. It has no effect if it is opened with the Adobe's free program Adobe Reader. The virus is very rare and it is very hard to make. Check out this site: http://news.com.com/2100-1001-271267.html. I would still continue downloading PDF files, even if not from a trustworthy source. The PDF format is almost totally immune from viruses.

PDF, musc, movies, games, you name it. Any file including any an all compressed files can contain a trojan virus, malware, spyware when downloaded.
All you have to do is go into some trusted webpages and they webpage can have an embedded trojan hidden. And you will be the victim of a drive by download. You will not even know unless you have really state of the art antiviurs detection running in the background..\

as the other bloke said , any file can contain a virus , but it is rare for pdf's to contain one , unless they are specifically designed that way , always scan the pdf , or any file before opening , and you should be right
