I think it is called Astral Projection!
It is a state where you relax, meditate and then manage to get your conciousness to leave your body for a flight of fancy anywhere you like.
I have never seen proof of this but my Grandfather swore blind that he could do it and visited Hotels before he went there to see what they were like... I'm not convinced !
If you are serious in trying this then you must learn to DEEP meditate first. I recommend the following:
Set your alarm clock 10 minutes earlier in a morning. Have it as close to you as possible. When it goes off, snooze whilst moving as little as possible. This will keep you as near as possible in a dream state. Then with your eyes closed, completely relaxed, count backwards in your mind from 100 to 1.
The hard bit is trying to keep your mind as absolutely blank as possible whilst you do this, and NOT fall asleep again lol !
In the final 10 seconds of counting you may feel dizzy, this is quite normal.
When you get to 1 you should, if it works, be extremely relaxed and in an almost lucid dream state, where you can sort of dream but control what is happening.
It is fun and the worst that happens is you fall asleep. After a couple of minutes you'll find you can't keep your mind from wandering so slowly come round, wriggle fingers, arms etc and "wake up". You'll feel more refreshed than normal.
Eventually you can do it by counting down from 50, then only 20. When you get better at it you can do it before bed, and even in the daytime.
Have fun !

As others already pointed out, it is most probably astral projection, projecting your astral body (etheric double of you) out of your physical body. When you sleep, your astral body comes out of the physical and undergoes several experiences, which you may see as dreams. The astral body is connected to the physical body with an infinitely long and flexible silver cord. If some danger is perceived, the astral jumps back into the physical and you may experience a thudding heart and fear etc. You may feel out of sort for a day or two till your astral again goes out of the physical and settles down properly in the physical.
Though it resembles you, your astral can be different too. For example, even I am old and infirm in my physical body, I can be young and strong in my astral, even if I am blind in physical body I can have eye sight in astral etc.
Astral body helps us to fulfill many desires which we cannot fulfill in real life. Astral travel can be controlled by practice and one can remember the events and the places.
Pl. see your local library for books. Some of the best books were written by Tuesday Lobsang Rampa.

Do you mean 'astral projection', as in out-of-body experience? If that's the case, it's not a science question. Ask about it over in religion & spirituality. People are probably just going to make fun of you here.
