In Italian history an irredentist is someone fighting against the Austro-Hungarian Empire to achieve the handing over to the Italian Kingdom of the territories inhabited by ethnic Italians which had been left under Austrian rule after the Italian independence wars. The most important irredentist were Cesare Battisti, Guglielmo Oberdan and Nazario Sauro.
