sounds like nothing will happen. He is just wanting you to have fear . If he is watching you , why did he wait until you left to only go right a scary note instead of do something to you right then.
Do what ever makes you feel safe, but usually people arent going to write you notes , they are just going to do it.
Sounds like intimidation and terrorism with a pencil and paper

Hire a private detective to follow the guy and let you know if the guy who threatened you is the same guy that left the note too.
A PDetective might be too expensive so, take two hour shifts and watch. Watch out from your place to see if the mean guy gets near your place.
Call the police on the phone the minute you spot him.
Practice saying on the phone your address, then your phone number, and then that the guy who left a note threatening your life is out side.
The minute you spot him call the police and get your family to a Safe Place to hold up, until the police arrive.

The police take reports they're not for personal protection so I'm not sure what others think they should do. Go to court get an order of protection against this guy. If you see him near your home call the police and they can lock him up for violating the court order. He must be served for the order to be valid though. Hope everything works out.

That is horrible, but take it very seriously. quite honestly I would start protecting your house. You should be able to have a warrant put out for him if you have a signed threating letter. If you cant or wont move then you need to start finding ways to prepare for the worst and definately start carrying some sort of protection. Never go places alone and ALWAYS keep a cell phone charged and with you at all times.

I am surprised the police did nothing more then a report. You really should ask for protection. He may hurt you. Or leave and stay somewhere else.

...make yourself a real "pain in the butt" with the police and notify the local FBI and the local News Media... the more coverage you have over your property and lives, the safer you'll be... contact the State Attorney General, the local State attorney and don't let up... Guns are very very dangerous if you have no training... be careful... if he's out on parole, contact his parole offer and don't let up.....

I would buy a gun and learn to use it. I would go for serious firepower, such as a 30 caliber semiautomatic rifle.
