OK usually I don't answer like this but comon have you people even worked with Koalas. KOALAS DO DRINK WATER. Man so much garbage gets spread around.

Three Myths.

1. Koala means "Don't drink".

Not true the closest aboriginal word to Koala is a tribe from Sydney that used KOLAH, which means old man. This was because due to their low fibre diet of eucalyptus is not an energy food so they spent allot of time sleeping.

2. Koalas don't drink.

Well I hate to break it to you but all our Koala enclosures have water bowls and dirt (eat it for the minerals) bowls, and trust me they drink from the water bowl quite regularly. It is true they can get there moisture from the dew on the leaves, but have you been to the areas where they live it would hardly keep them hydrated. It simply buys them time until they can safely get to a water supply.

3. Koala is a bear.

Its a marsupial not a bear or even a omnivore, it is closest related to the wombat, it has a rear facing pouch. The tag bear supposedly came from Teddy Roosevelt's trip to Australia where they were tagged with the bear term.

Please lets try and give factual information.

Good luck.

Koalas get their water requirements from the leaves they eat plus dew and rain on the leaves. As they spend nearly all their time in trees, there are few rivers or ponds to drink from. Koalas are not bears but are most closely related to wombats.

Technically, koalas don't "drink" directly from any water source. They get all the water they need from the eucalyptus leaves they ingest. That is why they have to take in tremendous amounts of eucalyptus leaves; aside from it being poor in nutrients, they have to get their moisture from it. Furthermore, they have super efficient kidneys that allow them to maximize their water intake from what they eat. And they're cute.
