It commemorates 2006 teammate Corey Lidle, who died in a plane crash soon after the Yankees were knocked out of the playoffs last October.

Other teams wearing season-long commemorative patches this year:
Minnesota -- patch featuring blue microphone and "Herb" for broadcastser Herb Carneal.

Atlanta - "LB 33 JS" for Lew Burdette (d. 06-Feb-07) and Johnny Sain (d. 07-Nov-06), both of whom wore #33 for the Braves.

Philadelphia - "VUK" for player/coach John Vukovich (d. 08-March-07).

St. Louis - "32" for teammate Josh Hancock (d. 29-April-07).

It is to commemorate Cory Lidle who was traded to the team last year along with Bobby Abreu and then died in a plane crash shortly after the conclusion of the 2006 season.

They're in mourning because they're 14.5 games behind the Sox. I would be sad all season too :(
