You will need about 65 disposable diapers to make a 3-tier diaper cake. Pampers Swaddlers are the best, but any kind will work. Use size 1. Open a diaper longways. Starting with the end that has the picture on it, roll the diaper up like a jelly roll, and secure with a piece of string or a rubber band. Roll all 65 diapers.
To make the bottom layer of the diaper cake, stand one diaper up, then stand 6 more diapers around it in a circle. Tie tightly with a piece of ribbon or string. Stand another 12 diapers up around that, and secure with string. Finally, stand a final ring of 18 more diapers around the circle, and tie tightly. This is your completed bottom layer.
Make your middle layer by repeating the step above. Leave off the final 18 diapers, so that the middle layer has a total of 19 diapers. Then, make the top layer by repeating only the first step (for a total of 7 diapers in the top layer.)
Now you are ready to assemble the diaper cake. Start with the bottom layer. Take 1 to 3 diapers out of the middle of your tightly tied bottom layer, and replace with a tall bottle of baby powder or shampoo. You can also use a baby blanket rolled into a cylinder. This will be your 'center support.' Make it about as tall as 2 and a half layers of the cake. Now take out the same number of diapers from the middle layer of the cake, and slide it into position over your support item and onto the bottom layer of the cake. Do the same thing with the top layer. As you go, you can remove another diaper here and there, and add onesies, burp cloths, or other baby care items if you want to. If you don't want the cake to have anything in it but diapers, then I recommend you use a 1/4" wood dowel through the center of the cake to stabilize it.
Once your base is assembled, then just wrap the ribbon you chose around the cake, and tie it in a big bow. Do this for each layer of the diaper cake. You can tuck baby care items inside this ribbon, or stick them to the outside of the ribbon with double sided tape. Just make sure you don't get any tape or glue on anything but the ribbon.

I would just use a rectangle standard cake pan and cut out the shape of a diaper. Maybe use pink frosting and buy some jumbo diaper clips to place on either side just for fun. I like your idea :)

you have to roll the diapers and bind them with a ribbon, and arrange the diaper bundles into the shape of a cake. Decorate with ribbons, small baby toys, bottles, ect.., and confettii. Be as creative as you want. You secure everything w/ the ribbons and pins. Here is a good how-to link:

Diaper cakes are great ideas for baby showers because they are useful in addition to making wonderful decorations for the baby shower party. Not to mention that they are inexpensive and easy to make, even for those who are not very crafty.
This is the 3 tiered diaper cake “recipe” that I used:
SUPPLIES
--3 dozen medium disposable diapers (trust me the mediums work way better then the newborn size)
--9 ounce baby bottle
--A platter to “serve” the diaper cake on, about 16 inches in diameter
--2 ½ yards of wide ribbon
--24 yards of narrow ribbon (since it’s a girl you’ll probably want to use pink)
--adhesive tape
--assorted baby items such as: teething rings, bibs, rattles, pacifiers, etc.
DIAPER CAKE INSTRUCTIONS
First cut 50 feet of the narrow ribbon into 1 foot lengths. Then roll each diaper up and tie it with one of the one foot pieces of ribbon. Next you’ll form the tiers of the diaper cake. Remember, this will be a three tiered cake. You will use the baby bottle to form the center of the first tier. Stand about a half dozen of the rolled and tied diapers around it. Take some of the narrow ribbon and tie them around the bottle. Take care not to tie it too loosely. The second tier is created in the same way, but using around 15 diapers. Instead of using the bottle as the center of this tier, you will use a few diapers in the center of this tier and then stand the other diapers around it. As in the first tier, use a length of ribbon to tie it all together firmly. For the third, or bottom, tier use approximately 27 diapers and follow the say instructions as for the second tier. Using some tape attach the bottom largest tier to the platter. Again using tape, attach the second tier to the bottom tier. Finally, attach the smallest tier to the second with tape. Tuck the assorted baby items inside the ribbons around each tier. If necessary use more ribbon to ensure they are secure. To finish, use the 1 inch wide ribbon around each tier to ensure a more secure and finished look.
