It's the best thing in the world to watch. By the way, if your child has a 1st birthday coming up, Wal-Mart offers free smash cakes with the birthday cake, which is cheaper than the exact ones at the local grocery stores. You may want to check yours locally, but when my twins turned 1, they each got a free one - I pd total of $16 for a cake w/kit and two smash cakes.

For my son's first birthday, we bought a small cake and put it infront of him and let him tear into it. He is 13 now and we were just watching the video the other day. He even had cake in his nose from putting his face directly into the cake. Just dont let the baby eat too much, he might get a tummy ache.

For both of my kids we gave them the first piece (big) and put in on their high chair (putting it on a plate is worse b/c they can pick it up and drop it)....and basically they are 90% covered in cake..and they eat about 10%...you still need to watch and make sure they don't choke...b/c they will be grabbing it and a lot of cake can be hard to swallow for a 1 year old who doesn't have all their teeth...Take lots of pictures....

For my son's first b-day we made him his own cake. He took a while to realize he would like it. He has always been really strange about anything on his hands. But once he realized it was worth the torment of the sticky fingers, He dug in. I have pictures of the cake too. He only ate in the middle. It looks like an oversized Cheerio. Anyways, it's a fun thing to do, but I think most parents only do this at their child's first Birthday.

Oh I SOOO cant wait for my daughters first birthday for this!!!!
She loves food and playiong with it as well, so im excited just thinking of it. 4 more months left!!!
Edit::
Why would anyone oppose of it really? those who do need to explain why. I mean nothing is hurting the baby of having a little fun on their first birthday. It's a very cute tradition. If they are aginst the cake then why even give it to their kids when older

Yes, and it was cute. My daughter had a cake for her birthday, and when she got it, she just ripped into it. All in her hair, and had to have a bath. It is a right of passage, all children have to do it. It is better to let them do it while they are small... that way you can have plenty of pictures to show them how they were growing up.

Yes! I actually gave him his own small cake for his first couple of birthdays. He loved it! My only advice is to cover the highchair in a plastic sheet beforehand. For weeks after the first cake, I cleaned frosting and cake out of crevices I didn't know our highchair had!

No. I was, however, that baby and my mom took copious photos of that moment with me and a chocolate cake. I still like chocolate cake to this day....
But why does she have to show these pictures to my wife?

Yes, on her first birthday. But it was a "mini" cake I made especially for smashing purposes. The rest of the party guests ate cupcakes.

No.... I hate that tradition.
But I did begrudgingly put a cupcake on my daughters highchair for her first birthday... the grandparents were all into it... ::sigh:: I refused to put the whole cake, but I had made cupcakes too with the leftover batter/frosting...
I was SO happy when my daughter looked at us like we were nuts... She dipped the tip of her finger in and licked it off! Haha! And then... My silly mother-in-law wasn't pleased with that I guess so she took the cupcake and smooshed it on my daughters face a little..... Ugh!!! I went to grab a washcloth... ::sigh::
I just don't get it.... It's a stupid tradition in my opinion and I'm NOT doing it this time with my son (he is currently 9.5 months).
Just my opinion, of course.
