The other day I was getting in the express lane at the grocery store behind an older woman who had probably 30 items (limit for the express checkout lane is 15). She knew this and even made a comment like "I'm just over the limit" and then laughed. After the long delay of checking all her items she goes through her purse and takes out a checkbook and slowly writes the check. Long story short I timed her and it took her seven minutes to get through the express checkout. It took me 32 seconds. Also while she was holding up the line, four more people had gotten in line behind us. What can be done about the old people? Perhaps a separate line for them? Also, whats with the checkbooks in this day and age?

It's not because she is old, it is just her personality.

If it would have been a teenager, would you have asked this question lumping all teenagers into that category, I don't think so.

She was just plain rude. It had nothing to do with her age.

Many times elderly people are slow because of phycial limitations, but this was not the case here. I see many rude people in grocery stores, both young, old and my age (LOL). Rudeness has nothing to do with age; however we usually expect that when people get older they would have learned a few manners along the way.

I don't know about the checkbook thing - I write a few checks a year.

A word to the wise you too will be old one day!!! Some people regardless of age will do exactly what you have described above and my question would be why do the elderly as well as young people do this it's wrong regardless of a persons age... Checkbooks because some folks like to keep very close track of what they spend and just like using a check as opposed to an ATM / Debit card... I am sure that your parents would be so proud of the lack of respect you have shown to someone older than you, maybe next time you should just go to a different register one without the elderly person at it... And I'll promise to go to the register for middle aged people only..................

Because we know our rights & the store has no rights to limit what a customer takes through their checkout lines. If they want our money, then they just have to deal with it. If they want your money, then they have to listen to your complaints & watch you making a fool out of yourself. A check book is a part of the "copy-copy-copy system" that gives us the needed paperwork to track down the mistakes that are made by electronic systems & cashiers who are improperly trained. By the way, many older people can't read the checkout signs anyway, so they could care less. What can be done about the old people, you ask? Give us all canes when we walk in the door so we can smack people like you when you give us guff over a few extra items & how we choose to pay our bills. You qualify for the label of NAZI in my eyes! If you keep letting us bother you, you could end up with a coronary! Perhaps then, you will understand why we are so "slow".

For exactly the same reason junior citizens do -- because they can and they are selfish.

Yes, as you get older you move a tad more slowly. But being a pig isn't age-related.

And some people don't have computers. Thus the checkbook.

What do you mean she "probably" had 30 items? You had seven minutes, and you didn't bother to actually count? You young whippersnappers are all the same. No respect for counting -- you just round everything off. How do you think that makes a number like 31 or 19 feel? If you were constantly getting rounded to the nearest multiple of 5, you might think twice about your sloppy counting.

Oh, and when people turn 30 years old they should be ground up for food, because if you wait until they're 85, they get all tough and stringy, and the osteoporosis gives a nasty flavor to their bone marrow.

When you become a senior citizen you will understand.

Many older people don't think like you do - they are mostly retired and in no hurry. It doesn't enter their mind that they are holding someone up, and most of them are kind people who would hurry if they thought you were being bothered by them. They move slower because their motor skills are slowed down considerably and their eyesight is probably poorer than yours and in some cases very poor.

Age changes a lot of things. I know because I am aging.

I have a deteriorating disc in my lower back, arthritis in both knees, a torn cartilege behind my right knee, and sometimes
I get arthritic pain in my neck, hands and arms. I also get headaches that are sometimes very severe, and at other times I get headache after headache for days at a time.
All these ailments affect what I can do and can't do as well as how I move and even what positions my body can stand.

Be patient - your turn is coming. :O)

HOLD IT RIGHT THERE!!!
I happen to be one of those old farts and I am always being shoved aside or spoken rude to. I am only 62 but my grey hair seems to be a red flag for some of these youngsters to mistreat. It would be a great world to live in if we ALL respected the rights of others no matter what their age or gender.
Older folks have a wealth of knowledge stored in their brains that you DO NOT/NOR COULD NOT possess at your age. We may not be the speedsters we used to be but we know the value of more things then just a dollar.
We, too, were young once and have full knowledge of what that felt like, we learned from it and even prospered from it-sadly, at this point you CAN'T say that.
Have a nice day

Have some respect!
What is going on with people these days?
And FYI-In my experience it has always been the younger people who blatantly show no regard for others in public.
I never find the elderly to be disrespectful or rude. They deserve our respect. Ever hear that term, RESPECT your Elders?
And don't forget-someday YOU will be their age. Consider how YOU would want to be treated after a long life.
Something to think about.
And regarding the checkbooks-not everybody WANTS to have an ATM card b/c they aren't always secure. It is THEIR right NOT to have one.

As a senior citizen myself(I am 72 years young) have not slowed down yet but my time is coming,I have found out that the most selfish disregards come from the younger people, they have not been raised to respect folks of their own age, much less their elders.
These folks that get around a little slow are in their golden years, let them savor the moment.
