With sky-high, record-breaking profits that oil companies are making, why do we pay these prices?

If EVERYONE would write their senator and congressman the gouging by the oil companies would stop or at least slow down. Start a letter campaign. If you compare the financial statements of the oil companies from the start of Bush's presidency till now it will make you sick.

Those who control gas prices know we won't do anything about it. I hate to say it, but my family with our three vehicles can afford to pay the gas price, so we complain very little about it. We honestly don't remember how much gas cost before 9/11 (65 cents?).

My outside family owns about 40 gas stations around East Tennessee and North Carolina. The actual gas company only makes a couple cents off of every gallon of gas they sell. They make more money off of a blowpop than they do a gallon of gas.

what is the alternative? if you want gas prices to go down, start reducing your usage of oil. not just for one day, that's naive. if people seriously used less gas on a daily basis, demand would go down and prices would fall. its supply and demand, you learn it in high school econ class, but apparently people forget it when they look at gas prices and just think "texaco must be evil." they aren't evil, they just know people will pay that much for gas. if people start buying less, they'll have to lower prices.
