I'm hoping to get in to the field of health social work. But do not know what career to choose. I have a strong desire to promote healthy behavior, learn about diseases and basically help people. So I'm thinking of getting a joint MSc on Public health(health promotion) and Social work. But I also like to posses knowledge about the treatment part of diseases also. For instance I would like to know how and why cetain diseases occur and how to treat them. Does Health promotion cover all these areas? If not do I go ahead with my chosen area and do my best? or will I be unhappy not doing EVERYTHING that I like to do?

The joint MSW/MPH is becoming a very popular degree especially in the policy advocacy area of any major health and Mental Health area (this can include infections - HIV, TB, etc; preventable - Diabetes, Heart Disease, etc.; degenerative - dialysis; progressive - MS, traumatic - TBI, paralysis; mental health - Schizophrenia, Bipoloar)

Obviously -work can also include direct service on the various units in hospital and other settings.

You will want to look for schools that have both. You might look at the NASW site under the health initiative. DA

Hmmm. It can be hard to find something that fits you EXACTLY. Some people just luck into their dream job -- others work to expand their job description into what they want.

I'd talk to your advisor or guidance counsellor about which road to take. You can also try and volunteer at offices where they do the kind of work you want to do, and ask your supervisors for specific advice. Internships may also be a possibility.

Luck favors the prepared. And remember, most people change jobs at least two or three times in a lifetime. You are not signing a lifetime contract -- if you don't like your job, you can ask around and find something more suitable.

Good luck.

This is very hard for two reasons.
Job responiblities change over time and with the markets and needs.
People change over time, with what they expect and understand.

On the upside you may get into a field that you can move around in and find many interesting changes over the years.

On the downside your expectations can change and you may decide on a different career altogether after a few years.

Best thing is to try a field of work and see how you like it, keeping in mind everything changes.

Essen is largely area of an somewhat super city sprawl section noted as "Ruhrgebiet", additionally a extensive city section. Chemnitz is a smaller, greater rural city in former East-Germany - an somewhat diverse subculture than the western area, and somewhat off the overwhelmed direction.
