Common goldfish will attempt to swim for quite some time. They will fight to get to the bottom of the tank and try to reestablish their bouyancy.

The longest I had one live in salt water was 6 hours. (Don't get all upset, I feed them to my eels)

The harder they try swim the faster they float to the surface. Some try to find a rock ledge to hold them down. I have had a few that could swim somewhat normal for a while.

Ok now you are asking the same question, just in reverse........now its just stupid...if you know it will die, then why do you need to know more.......its not difficult: Salt water fish: live in salt water, fresh in fresh.....birds fly...we breath air...hmmm....if you want to know so bad, why dont you do an experiment and try to live under water.......its the same as throwing a fresh water fish into salt........the organism suffocates then DIES...

It would be kinda like if we put you underwater w/no scuba gear. Painful and cruel. I really, really hope this is not something you are planning on doing!!!!
