if ur local exotic pet store doesn't carry baby leopard tortoises, then there are plenty of sites on the internet that do mail-order. a good site is kingsnake.com

While California is a good place to raise Leopard Tortoises, is your friend really sure about this? This is a BIG species that will live a LONG time if well-cared for.

I point this out because so many of the big tortoises get abandoned, released, abused, etc. by people who think they will be 'cool' until the sheer headache of caring for it every day kicks in.

I have a herd of three young Red-foot Tortoises which I dearly love, but every day for the next 30 years I have to make sure their temps, humidity, diet, cleanliness, space needs, etc. are perfect. This is easy at first, but after a few months it becomes annoying. Mornings I am running late, I STILL have to feed and water them. Days when there is not a lot of spare money, I STILL have to make sure they are adequately fed, etc.

It seems so easy and glamorous, until you are doing it every day for the next 11,000 days!

I went through the inter net to get 3 of 4 of my tortoises.....BUT.....Make sure that you are getting a captive bred, healthy, tortoise from a very qualified "tortoise breeder".......You don't want to get a tortoise from some one that is the bussiness just to make money.......get one from some one like Eddie Lok or Richard Phife they have been breeding Leopard tortoises 4 a while.....Richard has even wrote a book on the husbadry of the leopard tortoise.....Just make sure that the person that you are getting the tortoise from has knowlage of there care, you don't want to get a sick tortoise and end up paying hundreds in vet bills, been there I ended up paying over $1000.00 4 one of mine, just becouse I want to save money(not).....You may pay a bit more at 1st but it is well worth the extra 25-50 dollars.....places to check ar kingsnake.com, faunaclassifieds, .....Good luck.....
