I have 2 7-inch tinfoil barbs, 2 full grown tiger barbs, and a 7-inch pleco. Its sitting at about 81 degrees right now with a glass thermometer about halfway down 1 of the sides of the tank. Is this good?

To those that are mentioning other things besides temp, I've had this setup for 3 years now and have never had a problem with overcrowding, fighting, or overheating. I'm only concerned because I'm going away for 3 weeks and am trying to figure out if it will be ok to set the a/c to 85 degrees or so to save on the elec. bill. Im in Arizona where it gets much hotter than that.

I am in Arizona, and years ago before I knew enough about fish, I didnt really question my brother put the air up when I was gone over the weekend -- not off, but in the 80s or so I think, and it may have been off -- and came back to disaster. I would not risk turning off the air, fish are very suspetible. And 85 makes me a little nervous, since some air conditioners let things get hot before the air comes on. But, you know your system better than I do. I still feel bad - I think he let my cats get HOT also. Now I also have temperature sensitive geckos also. I had a variety of tropicals, including female bettas and mollies (like I said, this was years ago). Now I am very anal about temperature, and always have the air on just as comfy as if I am home. I figure, why should I be the only one comfortable anyway. But if you want to risk boiled fish -- you can try it. At worst, turn up the air, but not too high, maybe 80 degrees tops. It's getting hot out there now!

Sounds fine. 78 degrees is ideal but realistically temperature is hardly ever ideal in the wild so a few degrees up or down is OK. I'd still consider adjusting it down a degree or three through.

I'm actually more concerned about the tiger barbs. They can live as a pair but will usually spend all their time fighting each other. Generally 2 tiger barbs soon equals 1 tiger barb. It's safer to have at least 3 and preferably 5 of them. But with 3 7-inch fish around, maybe they are scared to fight each other.

The temp is a little high for the tinfoils someone suggested 78f id say that was the top for them. i would also suggest that your going to be pushing it for space with the tinfoils and the pleco, both species will exceed 10in easily although the tinfoil may become stunted and not grow any further.

I would try to keep the tank at 78, its a bit safer for the fish. In case something happens, like your ac breaks or other heat related mishap.
