Daniel Pinkwater's "The Snark-Out Boys And The Bacconburg Horror" is a good one. Pinkwater has several books for that age range, including the classic "The Hoboken Chicken Emergency."

I assume he is familiar with Lemony Snicket's "Series Of Unfortunate Events" books. If not, he should enjoy them.

"The Hobbit" by J.R.R. Tolkien is about the best adventure story for boys. C.S. Lewis' Narnia books is a close second.

Anything by Gary Paulsen. He writes adventure books with young boys as the main characters. Very few boys don't like him. Also Harry Potter is a hit with EVERYONE. (Except maybe closeminded Christians)
