As a member of the Houston Jewish community I would first like to say welcome.
In terms of neighborhoods most Jews in Houston live in the South West.
As many people have already mentioned Meyerland is the neighborhood that has Houston JCC as well as a few kosher restaurants and the largest Reform Synagogue, Beth Israel.
In terms of crime and home value the Meyerland has suffered over the past 20 years. It is not as safe as it once was and flood risks have depressed house values.
Right next to it though is Bellaire. It is a five min drive from the JCC and much of it very lovely though the price of housing can be quite high.
A lot of young couples have also moved to the first colony area in sugarland.
The commute is a bit longer, but the housing is very affordable and safe.

Meyerland and Maplewood South are the main Jewish areas of Houston(they're right next to each other). There's several Jewish Community Centers, synagogues, and schools in the area. It's pre-dominantly single family homes and expensive, but the apartments are relatively cheap.
Meyerland is the pricier of the 2 and the homes are bigger. As far as crime, it's not too bad in Meyerland, but Maplewood is a little tougher cause it's farther into Southwest Houston (rough area)..
P.S. Don't look to 'The Woodlands', it's no where near Houston...

Meyerland is a predominately jewish area. I would suggest you contact the Jewish Community Center on Braeswood in Meyerland for any info you need. Sorry but I don't have a link for you but they have been there for at least 35 years that I know of.
Note: I found the links. Mark above has them already listed.

the jewish population is very small for such a huge city, under 10,000. most of the city's jewish families have begun migrating from meyerland to areas like neighboring bellaire/west university, the galleria and highland village/river oaks (inside the loop). there are a few in the suburbs. but if you have lived in other large U.S. cities, you will definitely notice that the jewish community is very small.

Certainly. Try "Meyerland" on the southwest side. It was build because Jews weren't allowed to build houses in River Oaks. There is a huge jewish community center on Braes Boulevard.

There is a very nice one in The Woodlands (about a 30-45 minute drive from Downtown Houston depending on the time and day you drive it) ....it's located off Shadow Bend.
Downtown you take 45 (toward Dallas) exit The Woodland's Parkway (ramp exit goes over 45 on The parkway)....stay on this parkway for about 5 miles or so....Take a right on Gosling road and then a left on Shadow Bend.
I forget the address.
Hope that helps.

I can't say myself, but I would contact either the JCC or JFed (see first two links); the last link (don't forget to click at the bottom of that page for the second part) gives some history and current trends.
