How can Joe Montana NOT be considered the greatest QB ever? He played flawlessly and won all four Super Bowls he was in and was MVP in three of those. He was the best clutch QB ever and yes he had a great supporting cast, but he made a lot of those players appear better than they really were.
Living in Denver, all I ever hear is Elway talk, but John played well in only one of the five Super Bowls he played in. Even SB 32 in which he won, he did not have a stellar game. He was athletic and flashy, but Montana was incredible in the biggest games.

Number 2 is Unitas and #3 is Otto Graham, who led the Browns to championship games in all ten years he played there, winning seven of them.

AAAAARGGGGGH!

I am so sick of this question which always brings out stupid arguments about "Well >fill in player< led his team to n championships so he is clearly the best quarterback!"

What does winning a championship have to do with being a great quarterback? Almost nothing, that is what!

Winning a championship is a TEAM accomplishment, not an individual one!

After all, if defense wins championships then why isn't Butkus considered a complete failure because his Bear teams never won one?

For my money Manning is definitely on track to be the best ever. He'll have multiple championships to please all of you Lombardi Trophy fetishists. He will own every major passing record. He has MVP's and will win more of them. He calls all of the plays, a lost art and the reason he was the REAL MVP the last two seasons. He is extremely durable and has a shot at Favre's durability record.

In what possible way could a player with these accomplishments not be the best quarterback ever to play the game?

As for Montana v Marino, put them both on the same team. Montana would carry a clip board.

it's gotta be Brett Favre. He may not have the abunadance of rings like Montana, the 4th quarter drives like Elway, or all the records like Marino. But here some key facts:

147 career wins (1 short of John Elways record of 148)
57500 passing yards, 414 TDs, 5021 completions, 62% career completion, and a 87% QB rating, 3 time MVP all consecutive, Super Bowl Champion and has only had 1 losing season out of 16 seasons.

like i said, he may not have an abundance of one thing, but he has a mixture of what every Hall of Fame QB did. After this season he'll have more wins than Elway, ecllipse almost if not all of Marino's records, and can say he's a super bowl champion and a 3 time MVP without ever having the hall of fame talent surrounding him like Montana, Elway and Marino did (aside from Reggie White). Think about it, did Favre ever have a offense like the one Montana did with Rice,John Taylor, Roger Craig, Brent Jones, William Floyd, the west coast offense when no one knew how to stop it? and on the defense Ronnie Lott and Matt Millen? no. Did Favre ever have a Hall of Fame receving duo like the Mark Brothers for Marino? no. And how long did it take Elway to finally win a superbowl? when he had Terell Davis, Shannon Sharpe, Rod Smith, Steve Atwater, and all the other great players on the 97-98 team. Bottom line is Brett favre has done all of that without ever having that much talent around him. A born competitor, winner, and champion.

I would have to say Brett Favre. Brett never had any great talent around him. There were some really great players at times, but he didn't have any hall-of-fame talent most quarterbacks in the hall had. He has started in 237 consecutive games. The guy is a 3 time MVP and is second in most of the major passing records. Favre is a one of a kind player and should be considered the greatest.

Too many outstanding performers in various eras to pick just one. Let me list my Top 10 ( in no particular order )

John Elway
Joe Montana
Terry Bradshaw
Sammy Baugh
Otto Graham
Roger Staubach
Sid Luckman
John Unitas
Brett Favre
Dan Marino

It occurs to me that Favre is the only QB in my Top 10 that is still an active player. This begs the question, " Who is the top active NFL QB " ?

Though Favre would be in my all-time Top 10, at this point in their respective careers, I would rank Peyton Manning,
Tom Brady and Donovan McNabb ahead of Favre in the 2007 season.

John Elway cannot even begin to compare to the greatness that is Joe Montana, they played in the same era and Montana killed him. remeber the superbowl where the 49er's beat Elways broncos 55-10 in superbowl XXIV, handed Mr. Elway his hat. Now the bast is always based on wins and who won more superbowl than Joe Montana, nobody, in fact only guy even matched his superbowl wins Terry Bradshaw. They are impossible to compare the two of them because of many reasons. Dan Marino never performed in the big game and cannot be mentioned in the same breath with Joe Montana.

Dan Marino, Johnny Unitas, Jim Kelly (he lost 4 Super Bowls but NO other QB in history has ever taken his team to 4 straight).
