to read a novel and remember all the details, understand the story, and enjoy it. the only thing you can do is practice just read as much as possible. when you do this read non-stop for a few hours. i can finish over 350 pages a day.

but if you want speed reading tips i recommend something that helps me, i use the three finger method. it's where you take your first three fingers and follow it along the text. move your fingers to the end of the line then back to the beginning again. don't take your fingers off the page and move your fingers in a continuous motion. move your finger as fast as you want to read. start slow and move faster as you go until you find a comfortable pace. you read faster this way because your eyes follow the text smoother when it has something to follow. you won't get all the details but you should get the main idea of the story. this is also a good method to use when reading a text book. I've used it once to finish a 300 page novel in a few hours and i knew enough to get a B on a quiz the next day.

Learn to sight read, which is a way of scanning the first sentence of a paragraph and then looking through the rest rapidly to see if it merely fleshes out the lead statement. If it appears in the next paragraph you missed something, go back. In a the case of a lot of romance novels, when the hero and heroine start kissing, you can pretty much skip to where they start talking again. You won't have missed much.
And if the author is big on detailing every plant, tree, rock and stream in the place, you can skip those paragraphs, too.

Listen to the audio version. Get the audio version on CD and rip it to a MP3 player. Then you can be reading your novel while doing chores, walking the dog, commuting or whatever. I prefer it -- haven't read a novel on paper in years. Some public libraries have a pretty good selection of audio books.

I find that if I am going to read, it must be a day when I have no other obligations going on. If I have even a trace of a schedule on my mind, it detours me from reading and enjoying what I read. Thus, it takes me longer to read it. Another thing I make sure I have the house quite so I can enter the "World " of the book I am reading. No distractions, no kids, just quite and then I seem to enveloped into the pleasure of reading!

Don't think of it as an assignment. Think of it as a story or a tv show or something you like. Reading a book is like watching tv but better because you actually gain things!

Practice, practice, practice!

Of course there are other methods of improving you reading speed. I recently bought EyeQ, a reading enhancement software, and its REALLy works. Seriously, try it if you don't believe me. I improved my reading score from 600 words per minute to 1056 words.
