I purchased my home in Janurary 07. I recently started using the A/C. The inside unit was replaced in october 06 The outside unit was not replaced ( i have a heat pump) I noticed the A/C was not working properly and began to call the "professional" who installed it. I told him that the A/C would never reach the tempature I set it on and it ran at least 12 hours a day . He said this is normal LET IT RUN. He did stop by once and put in some freeon. This continued so I called another repairman and he stated there was way to much coolant in it and that he had to take some out and that my inside unit being enclosed in a closet was not going to work he also stated that my inside unit and outdoor unit are not compatable. Today my A/C unit outside burnt up. It couldnt not keep up with the new updated unit inside and it burnt it up. I spoke with 2 professionals today and they both stated to call him up and tell him to make it right or I was going to sue. What do you think.

I used the emergency setting I would say 85% of the time. It was very cold here. So yes it worked but I wasn't using it a lot. I actually spoke to a man that at one time worked for this company and he said being that my outdoor unit was at least 20 years old he should have never installed the new unit inside and not outside. He said its just not realistic. And as far as having the other repairman look at it. I didnt know what else to do it was going on 3 weeks with no resolve and him trying to avoid me. I mean it is what it is and I will have to install a new outdoor unit regaurdless. I just feel its an issue that should have not even come up. He knew what he was doing and did it wrong anyways. Whats my chances of getting a new one in, in a day LOL its gonna be 90 here tomorrow!

Talk to an attorney first. You have to be able to prove that the installer was at fault. Then you might be able to do something along those lines. I rather expect that you would not be able to recover anything except the cost to make it right. The other thing you might do is talk to friends, neighbors, family, people at work and find a good honest repair service and get a written statement as to what needed to be done and what the charge would be.

Did the heat pump function properly in the heaing season, or were you using your backup heat (did you see the outdoor unit running in the heating season). The guy who installed the new indoor unit should have verified that the OD unit was compatable. You'll have to get him out there to explain what happened. Now that you've had two differnt guys work on the unit, he may say that removing the refrigerant caused the damage. Good luck.
