X + X^2 = 72
X^2 + X - 72 = 0 factor
(X +9)(X -8) = 0
X = 8 or X = -9

X + X^2 = 30
X^2 + X - 30 = 0
(X + 6)(X - 5) = 0
X = -6 or X = 5

x^2 + x = 72
So x^2 + x -72 = 0
I don't feel like working out the math but that's how you set it up.
Use the quadratic equation too if it doesn't factor :]
x = [-b +/- ((radical) b^2 - 4ac) ] / 2a
ax^2 + bx - c = 0
