Does this requirement indicate a high risk of break-ins or other damage?

No. It indicates nothing. It probably means that the landlord does not want to deal with tenants suing him over issues that should be covered by their own insurance. Slum lords, by the way, seldom require renters insurance, and nowhere would break-ins be more prevalent than in the slums. Neither do owners of illegal apartments, the the safety record of illegal apartments is hardly commendable.

No Landlord or anyone for that matter has the right to tell you to get renters insurance it's up to you plus renters insurance is cheap about $100 per year but it's worth it but no one has the right to demand that you get it if you get robbed or a fire and you loose things then you'll have to replace your things yourself. But yes I'd tell them a thing or two lol.Good Luck

you should never avoid renters insurance, they require it because if there is a flood, or storm damage or fire ... you have no stuff ... they won't pay for it ... if you have renters insurance it's replaced.

No it does not mean there is a higher risk of breakins or other damage, its becoming a necessity now so that people will be repsonsible for their things.

If you have car insurance it should only cost a few dollars to add it to your exisiting policy ... trust me you don't want to be with out it.

Not at all. Renters insurance is less then $200 a year. If you don't have it, and the whole building burns down, you get nothing, zilch, nada.
