Actually, it was a bit closer then some think. After the war, several higher people in Congress and others actually offered Washington the title of King, and to make the government a dictatorship. Washington replied with one of my favorite quotes ever by him, by saying: "I did not fight the war against King George III, only to become King George the First." He then said he would accept the role as President of the newly freed states.

The revolutionary war was about being free from a monarchy..There was no evidence of anyone even having a second thought about a monarchy being established. Would Washington have served better..I don't think so. We did come close to losing the war of 1812 and had we done so.. there would have been a monarchy in place.. but not by the hand of the revolutionist, I don't think.

Not close at all--George Washington, the only US President to be elected unanimously by the Electoral College, declined a third term of office, setting a precedent for all other US Presidents to follow until the administration of Franklin D. Roosevelt.

While serving as President, Washington made sure not to copy the manners and customs of European courts, preferring the title of "Mr. President" and refusing to be called by anything grander. At the end of his second term of office, he retired to Mount Vernon in 1797. Indeed, Washington's contemporaries as well as latter historians alike agree that Washington's ability to walk away from a very powerful position showed his greatness. Since the young American Republic truly wanted to take a different path than the European powers, Washington's service to the nation as its first citizen set a better tone than if he accepted a crown.
