He moved up into older division this year. He is not adjusting well to batting. He will not stay in the batter box he afraid he will get hit. Any suggestions what to say or teach to him to give him more confidence. He does enjoy the game and seems to want to play. He is eleven year old and somewhat small for his age.

For starters take him out to the field and pitch to him. For the stepping out of the box place a bat bag or bat behind him so if he steps out he will trip. You may also take him to the batting cages every chance you get. Hitting the ball in the cages will only give him more confidence that will carry over into hitting off pitchers or you in practice. A lot of positives will go a long way to helping him. Make sure what ever you do to keep it fun if you want him to keep going out for the team each year. Something else that might work is to get him three or four hitting lessons from the local cage. Most go for arounf 30.00 for a half hours lesson. It sometimes helps to hear from someone else what he should be doing and how to improve it instead of just you. But most important is to keep his spirits up and always offer encouragement.

Take him to a ball field at his school or the park and throw some balls at him to hit....get his confidence up. It will also help him see the ball and make contact. If that doesn't help and he continues to struggle...I suggest going with community ed baseball. I was on a community ed team for Grade 4 through 6 and it was fun, and it helped.

Good luck.

well i look at it this way, Ya he could get hit but if the opposing pitcher starts hitting batters he won`t be pitching for to long. Tell him he has to keep an eye on the ball. You could even pitch to him say a wiffle ball and try and teach him to move his feet if the ball gets to close.

For me, i've got continually theory that a song is a poem which may well be sung-- like this piece.

Encourage him to play tennis. From your description, baseball is not his sport.
