Take the fish out immediately, leaving them in the same water. Clean out the aquarium completely, including stones and filter and filter media. Put in fresh water treated with chlorine/chloramine remover, add beneficial bacteria, and some stress coat. Gradually introduce fresh water from tank to the container fish are held. Take about 10 minutes, adding more water every three minutes. Get net, scoop fish back into tank.
Clean filter media and vacuum stones once a week or biweekly. Change water every two weeks (or more or less depending on how many fish you have) by 20 to 30 percent.
Each time you do water change - add more chlorine remover, stress coat and beneficial bacteria (every time you do a water change). Clean the tank 50% percent change of water every four months, complete change every 6 months.
Get an ammonia kit, which will measure the levels.

three things to think about, when was the last time you did a water change, how old is the charcoal in your filter and do you have the amonia bag in your filter as well as the charcoal bag. providing it is an aquaclear filter and not one of those biolife filters. i hate those i think they are a waste of time and money.
to do a water change. first use a tank scrubber and scrubb the inside of your tank get all the algae off the glass and ornaments. the water will become mirky.....relax this will not harm the fish. let the filter clean the water. mine takes about 20 mins for the water to clear. then you remove about 1/4 of the water to about half depending on the size of the tank and how bad the smell is. replace with new clean water and tank neutralizer. then you give your filter a good cleaning. with the filter bags check to see if the bags are intact with no bad odor. do the same with your sponge. replace and get it running. the smell should subside within 2 days. if this doesn't help you may want to replace the sponge and the charcoal both. and if there is an amonia bag. try removing it for a day. if the gravel inside the bag is too old it may not filter out the amonia like it should.

Filtration, water adjustments and organic and organic load. Filtration: in case you do not have a filtered tank, purchase a filter out. If this may be a bowl and not an aquarium do away with it and purchase an aquarium. maximum bowls can not manage filtration ok and that they are in basic terms a soreness, get a tank. Water adjustments. do no longer thoroughly sparkling the aquarium. do no longer take each little thing out, sparkling it and initiate over. The organic technique is for micro organism to envision and help wreck the fish waste down although you should do water adjustments besides. It sounds such as you should start changing the water interior the tank. i in my view do large water adjustments although that varies at one in all those fish I relatively have. to start i want to advise changing 10-20% of the water daily for no less than each week or longer if the smell continues to be there. you should use a water conditioner to be sure the chlorine is being eradicated. After this era you are able to substitute to changing 25% two times each week and while your aquarium now no longer smells and seems working nicely then you definately can drop all the way down to 20-5% each week. a bigger substitute is positive besides although 25% each week is a great base point. organic and organic load. you are able to nicely be feeding too lots or have too many fish interior the tank. in case you have been compelled to stay in a closet with 3 acquaintances it does no longer smell ok the two and can you imaging in case you have been continuously being given extra foodstuff than you should eat? once you feed the fish in basic terms feed them as much as they might eat in a jiffy. If foodstuff is left after this, you're feeding too lots and ought to diminish returned. in case you get on a maintenance schedule a tank turns into relatively uncomplicated to shelter and is a exhilaration although you should do a small quantity of artwork on a extensive-unfold foundation.

Takes some of the water and put it in a seperate container put your fish from the old tank into the new tank. Scrub the first tank out really good. Wash the rocks offf as well once you do this, depending on what kind of tank filters you have, (I had wisper three filters) Replace the filters add new water, and the right amount of treatment for the tank. try to get hte water as close to the water temp that your fish will be in at this point in time (This will be critical as diffent water temps will put your fish in shock and kill them. (moving them might kill them any way, but it is all about timing.I used to clean my tank evey 3-6 months. Also keep alot of snails in your tank to keep algy away. Try this and let me know how this works. (Cones2210@yahoo.com

First a water change and a look at how you normally maintain your tank. You should be doing a 25% water change with a gravel siphon to clean the gravel each week. If you are doing that then you most likely need additional filtration. Carbon in the filter will also help to reduce odors.

Do at least a 50% water change and service your filter. If the ammonia still smells after that, maybe add some Ammo-Lock or any ammonia de-toxifying device. Live plants also use ammonia as a backup food source.

You need to do a partial water change badly. That is the short term fix. Long term you need better filtration.
