I was playing trivial pursuit, and this question came up. "What does FM stand for?" The problem was the answer. The person answering the question said "Frequency Modulator." The answer on the card was "Frequency Modulation." This may be a stupid question, but would you give the answerer credit for this answer? I am just curious what other people would have done in this situation.

I did forget one other detail...When he first answered he said, "Frequency Modula.." and the rest of the word was inaudible. He kind of mumbled the rest. I asked for a clarification because I knew that he didn't know what the rest was supposed to be for sure. Thats when he decided on Frequency Modulator.

As the asker of the question it was up to me to decide whether to give him credit or not.

I would. Pretty darn close IMHO I could see if this was a cut throat pro tourney or something but a bunch of friends/fam? I'd give it to em.

Frequency Modulation

It should be Frequency Modulation. The question assumes a thing not a person, because if it refers to a person, the correct answer should not be Frequency Modulator but Ferdinand Marcos.
To be fair to all players, better throw that card away.

No. Frequency Modulator would be something or someone that modulates frequencies. Frequency Modulation is a thing in itself. The two terms ARE different.

The correct answer is Frequency Modulation.

FYI: AM is for amplitude modulation.

No, I would have had to say they were incorrect. It is modulation, not modulator. Only radio stations have modulators. You at home, or in your car, have a device which contains a circuit that can be tuned to pick up frequencies of carrier waves undergoing modulation--the stereo.

The rules allow the players to decide, in advance, how picky they want to be. Is a form of the answer OK or do you want the exact answer on the card? I've noticed several wrong answers are declared "correct" on the cards.

I wouldn't have given him/her credit even if he/she is my fiance/best friend. It may just be a play of words but it's still incorrect. Besides, it'd end up with everyone being a little enlightened about the what FM stands for. Its funnier to correct mistakes of others than to not correct them at all.

Think Alex Trebek

Thank Alex Trebek

A modulator is not a modulation.

However if you modulate the modulator your modulations will be modulated to modulate.

I would not. FM means frequency modulation. Frequency modulator would mean a device or someone who accomplishes it.
