PS, My Flash disk is shown in My Computer window but no files are displayed and that I get a "cannot copy" error (which means I can't move any files onto it either). I suspect that it might that my USB port is and older version. My PC is Windows XP SP1 and about 6 years old.

PS, My Flash disk is shown in My Computer window but no files are displayed and that I get a "cannot copy" error (which means I can't move any files onto it either). I suspect that it might that my USB port is and older version. My PC is Windows XP SP1 and about 6 years old.

EDIT: I also have to add that it's not just my USB Flash drive, but I also tried to copy files on to an external hard drive i bought also recently and it got the same error message. As for the driver, I need to put a CD in the CD drive, which I don't have. I've checked the status of the driver on the device manager and it tells me that the whole USB port is working properly. I heard that there is software to fix this kind of problem, if I am correct? Further suggestions welcome. Upgrading to SP2 is sure a good idea, but I fear the lost of files and that I don't have much time to spend on a old PC (I've upgraded this PC many times).

before you unplug the drive, do you stop it ? If you just pull it out, the data may not get written

As you told that your PC is old the USB flash disk is having a high speed transfer rate. U can do is upgrade your XP with SP2 and delete the USB drivers in the PC from device manager.
Next time when u plug it it will load all the drivers

Is it working with other new PC's. If having the same problem, then try replacing it.

Hmmm... Some good replies. The problem may also be in corrupt dll files. When Xp acts up and I am clueless as to why I try running a not so publicized windows command the system file checker. It's still there, since Windows 95. What it does is checks that all the .dll files correspond with the registry information for that .dll. If the file has been altered or corrupted it can cause problems as described with your flash drive.

here's the command:

start>run>SFC /SCANNOW

you may be asked for your windows cd if files need to be restored. Hope it helps.

update you windows xp to service pack 2 for a start go to microsoft web site and look for updates click on updates this will start the update procedure.

now your system will only have usb 1 but once you update you will be able to read your flash drive. you could buy a PCI USB 2 card,

do update your system first

sometimes flash drives do not always seem to be readable.
Check to see if the driver in the device manager is installed properly.
If not uninstall
Reboot.
After the startup sequence is all over plug in the drive ( you may want to use another usb port ) Let it install by itself.
Try it then.

Flash drive is a fake. I have seen one. Labeled 1 Gig but when you store your files in it.....it will not store, or if it does, you will probably find it missing after wards.

Return it as soon as possible to where you bought it. Hope it is still with warranty.

Hope this helps.

Carling is right, you defintely need to update to SP2. Keeping your computer updated will help with newer devices that are being used today.
