i am trying to get my bettas to start breeding but for some reason the male won't build his nest. i just recently but the male and female in a new 10 gal. tank (female is in the tank but in a divided seethru section) but the male won't build his nest. i had them both in a smaller tank with a seethru divider and once i unvailed the female to him started building a nest and it got pretty big. i heard it would be best to have them both seperated in a bigger tank but i had them in there for over two weeks but nothing. what's wrong?

You could try to seperate them for a week or so or as MM mentioned put something between them so the male can't see the female. Also is the female ready to spawn? Does she have a egg spot that looks full or a white spot on the tip of it? There are a number of reasons this could be happening. Make sure the water temp is around 80 degrees at all times and check the water for impurities. Good Luck!

Others are right, it could be temperature, settling in to a new tank, or even the fact that he can see the female all of the time now. I would check the temperature, see to feeding them both properly and place something between them so that he can't see her all of the time. Most of all... patience, they will be ready when they are ready and not a day sooner no matter what.

Give it some time! Temp should be 78-82*, what are you feeding? How old is your Betta? When you want to breed Betta's you should try to get one as young as possible, find a breeder close to you, you will increase your chances for successful breeding!

What are the water conditions and temperatures like?

They like it on the warm side.

Food is another consideration. They have to have good nutrition to breed.

Bettas like still water. If you have an energetic filter or air pump, consider changing to something more gentle.

you need to allow the male Betta to caress the female Betta to encourage the eggs from the female as soon as he caresses her watch her for a while when she starts to have the babies hell build his nest and that is when you separate them your giving him the candy while its still in the wrapper if you don't take the female away as soon as she has the babies shell eat them

They breed when the conditions are right. Try checking the temperature, it should be around 75-80

may be he`s not chasing her to kill but maybe he`s chasing her to produce some sperms for the eggs to produce babbies(i am not sure)
