Alright, so I used to have a beta, very very easy fish to take care of. So a few nights ago I won an albino goldfish at this stupid fair thing and I don't have the heart to kill it. In fact I've grown rather attached to the thing. I went out and bought him a tank and a filter and an aerator some gravel and even a fake fish friend. I know I need to get some plants and a place for him to hid yet. but My question is why does he keep swimming against the walls? Up and down against the wall? I cleaned his water and checked the ph and heat level. I don't know what could be wrong or what else to do. I fed him also. He's a little guy, in a three gallon upright fish tank.

Oh yeah, if you have any advice on how to keep him happy also that would be great.

The beta bowl didn't work out too well. Thanks

find him a new home. the types of goldfish they give away at fairs get up to 24" and are really best in ponds. look for a place near you that has a goldfish or koi pond. DO NOT put him in a natural pond or stream.

garden clubs, public parks, school, and plant nurseries usually have goldfish ponds and would most likely take a donated fish off your hands.

I know you've grown attatched to him, but he'll need AT LEAST 75gallons eventually. if you want him to be happy and healthy find him a new home.

I had two comet goldfish (they were just those "feeder" fish that people typically get to feed to bigger fish!). They lived to be 12 years old, so I know a thing or two about how to make goldfish happy in a confined space.

First of all, the swimming frantically is normal and typically occurs during the first week or so. I do recommend getting him or her a partner. Don't get more than one other goldfish though because they will grow quite large. Since its in a 3 gallon tank, I wouldn't go as far as recommending adding another unless you are willing to move them to a larger aquarium in another year or so after the fish have grown out of the 3-gallon aquarium. My two lived in a 10 gallon aquarium and were both about 4 inches long.

Goldfish like cool, room temperature water (no cooler than 64 degrees and no warmer than 72 degrees). I recommend feeding your fish once per day every two days. This doesn't seem like a lot, but your fish will live longer and be healthier if you restrict his diet, especially in such a confined space.

The best way to keep a goldfish happy is to talk to it. Eventually they notice you in the room and get excited. If they don't have a companion, you are the only friend they've got, so make the most of it.

Goldfish are incredibly strong, hardy fish and you will probably have many years of enjoyment if you move him to a 10 gallon aquarium and add a friend to keep him company in another year or so.

Have fun!

the one fact everyone seemed to miss is that the tank is not cycled. The biofilter has not finished spiking yet. Have you tested for ammonia and nitrites?

Goldfish don't swim up and down the glass unless they are looking for a way out. PH isn't really a factor for goldies as long as it is steady. Water changes should be limited to 1 gallon once a week. Plants are not needed for goldies. Chances are he will uproot them anyway. Goldies don't need places to hide like some fish. They are a bolder fish than most.

NO HEAT. NO HEATER. Room temperature and below 72 to keep him healthy and happy.

Also Goldfish need a balanced diet. When choosing a fish food choose one with high protein (48% or better) and low fat (5% or less)

You can supplement their diet with things like Lettuce, mustard greens, turnip greens, collard greens, spinach, peas, endive, seaweed, cukes, kale, chard, broccoli, lima beans, green beans, etc. and feed aquatic plants (e.g. duckweed, azolla, salvenia, etc) or hair algae daily.

For their Carotenoids which are a family of pigments the fish can't make themselves and are obtained as part of the diet. These pigments result in red, yellow and orange colors. Fish have cells called chromataphores. Those cells convert lutein and carotenes into astaxanthin which is the red pigment.
sources include, brine shrimp, krill, spirulina, marigold flowers, paprika, sweet red peppers, yams, carrots, pumpkin

Watermellons and oranges are also good as well as proteins like chicken (chicken livers) beef (livers and parts) and pork as well as worms and bugs.

Until the tank cycles and the ammonia and nitrites decrease, your fish is being stressed out. Test the water and if need be do a water change.

nicely tetras are tropical fish and shouldnt quite be stored with goldfish for many motives.... a million) goldfish produce thank you to plenty waste and in case you dont clean it out very many times then all your fish will go through 2) goldfish are coldwater fish and keeping coldwater with heat you cant get the the terrific option temperatures for each fish that's undesirable for their wellness 3) they only shouldnt guppies can bypass the two way they are able to consume golfish good, i feed the guppies in my pond goldfish foodstuff. even with the shown fact that it could not incorporate the the terrific option foodstuff for the tropical fish, that's yet one greater reason they shouldnt bekept at the same time

perhaps just checking the new world he's in. sometimes fish do that.

keping him happy? well you're gonna need to make the tank look as natual as possible, give him plants (hard types so that he won't eat it) and some hollow rocks. it'll be fun for him.

and instead of fake fishy friend, why not add another one?
it's fun watching fishes swim and play together.

the comet gold fish just do that, if you want to make him happy buy him a compainion or two, gold fish do better in long tanks like a 10 gallon would do and three goldfish would be ok in a 10 gallon, make sure you don't get anymore comets, as that is what fairs always have they get huge! get one or two fantails they will school together as much as gold fish do. also buy some freeze dried blood worms gold fish love those.

Possiblity he can see his own relection however he could be just looking for away out, and all he is doing is exploring he sounds as happy as larry however he will really need a larger space if he is to achieve his full potential.

I don't have any advice but thought that I would say how glad I am that you won this goldfish, someone may have just chucked him/her down the toilet.
