...making sure that Iran does not become a nuclear power, or stabilizing the Middle East?

One of my harshest critics on YA keeps saying that the whole thing is about making sure that the "Islamofacists" don't obtain nukes, and that we will be fighting in the ME for a long, long time, maybe for the next hundred years. If this is true, why didn't the Shrub tell us the truth in the first place? If the whole idea was to create a base close to Iran, why didn't he say so? Could it be because he knew that the people he works for (ostensibly the American public, who voted for him... )would not have approved??

Yes, just as americans did not want to be involved in WW2, FDR probably lied to the public about prior knowledge of the attack on pearl harbor( this is debatable) americans typically have to be prodded into a full out war with a draft things have to be really bad to convince the american public to support war...do we have to wait until that time would come? my point is the Iranian government is a brutal regime that has indicated it would like to dominate the region, a regime that is in fact brutally opressing those they do not care for, women, gays, christians ect, there are many other terrorist groups in many nations in the region, and the arabs? oh wahabbism is a lovely concept no jew is even allowed in the country and they think westerners are pigs, it would be highly irresponsible to allow the iranians or any terrorist group to aquire nuke weapons as there is a high probability they would use them to further their cause, do you want to live under the opression of a group of men who would force "sharia"law on you? do we help others that are being opressed? do we let them blow up girls schools because they do not tolerated educated women? our president is on record as stating this would be a long struggle, very long, is this what people want to hear? probably not, this is a brutal stubborn enemy we face, they want their way and are willing to fight for many generations they groom their young to carry on the struggle to have their sick way of oppression, muslims swept through my parents homeland of Spain centurys ago...believe me they were not welcome, they were conquerors, this current version of radical islam is potentially nuke armed...Iwant to make it clear the majority of islam is peaceful...dominated by dictators and thugs, god willing no has nuke weapons eventually...nuclear proliferation is the big issue here, and our presense in the region is calculated to keep a thumb on radicals and give decent people a shot at at least having basic human rights, unfortunatly radicals do not want this for there own citizens hence the fact that they destroy all infrastructure we develop, greed for oil is a small part of the reason we are there...plenty of greed to go around in regards to all nations and both our political parties, again nuclear proliferation is the main threat. this could possibly go on indefinatly in one place or another against the same enemy, they will be difficult to defeat, mark my word if the dems sweep into power they will not give up this struggle, it would be irresponsable to do so, the west is united against iranian nuke development....flat fact. I have served in the middle east and would would gladly do so again, long answer to a complex problem, visit the region and explore the culture of violence, honor killings, tribalism.

i don't think we went in expecting iran to be the bastards that they r being right now. who could have predicted that the iranian people would elect a terrorist organization to lead their nation. The plan was to take out the top terrorists of the world; saddam hussein, osama bin laden, al-zarqawi. up to this point we have taken care of 2 of the 3 major terrorist leaders and osama is pretty much ineffective right now. SO the next step would be to slowly start taking the terrorists out from the most concentrated points and moving outward until terrrorist strongholds r eliminated and u only have little scattered groups left (we obviously cant kill all of em).
Then the terrorists will be like a team without a leader and will simply fall apart. just give it some time, i think u will c that there is a mission in Iraq and that when we win, the world will be a much safer place to live 4 everybody. we wont be there 100 years. i think we can do it in about 5 and have the ME in a secure state and able to defend themselves.

Americans have long had isolationist tendencies. The US had to be dragged reluctantly, by it's leaders, into every major war of the 20th century.

Even though we've entered a 21st century durring which the globe will become even 'smaller' than it did in the 20th, that isolationist tendency is still there, and the political, business, and military leaders of the US are struggling to overcome it, for fear that an isolated America would not only lose it's current place of prominence in world afairs, but, as a result, quite possiblly lose it's soveriegnity, and, by extension, the freedoms of it's people, as well.

That's a lot of high minded gobledegook to basically say we need to get out there and conquer if we want to remain an empire, but that doesn't make it any less true. If isolationism wins the US is doomed.

The US trained them during the "Cold War".

What's that tell ya?

"Islamofacist" is the worst excuse I've ever heard. As someone in the military, I know, and everyone else should if they'd do they're homework, that enemies are made not born. If we were such good friends with them during the "Cold War", what changed their minds to hating us. Did we break a promise? Or did we use them as a scapegoat for OPEC? Too many people get their info from the news. When will they start doing research again?

OH! and even though they suck this year, Go Pacers!

i do no longer think of you may desire to have a extra clever teach than the solutions you acquire so far, by skill of examining the solutions you acquire you will understand that what you pronounced replaced into appropriate, somewhat if we glance decrease back on the history of the "state of Israel" we are in a position to be sure they planed for this an prolonged time in the past, they planed for mendacity on all and sundry and convince human beings they have a case, at the instant i've got been listening to new data that Palestine replaced into Israel land and the romans kicked them out, some fiction thoughts you will in straight forward terms pay attention from Jews and the ignorant parrots who repeat each and every thing they pay attention, it replaced into the longest and brainwash operation in the worldwide, and we'd desire to confess how clever Jews have been however the time has replaced and we see the Israeli governments making blunders one after yet another, if we take a glance at Israeli graph simply by fact the recent millennium we are in a position to understand few issues first the withdrawal from south Lebanon in a shame way which (2000) and after that we observed the single part withdrawal from Gaza (2005) The conflict on Lebanon which they admit they lost (2006) and ultimately this twelve months the conflict on Gaza or perhaps although each and every of the civilian casualties ( over 500 infants and one hundred women ) , Israel could no longer gain the objectives they introduced to the worldwide ( provide up hamas rockets ) , reason until ultimately today we are in a position to be sure Hamas firing rockets on Israel (3 Rockets today) attempting to interrupt the medieval siege somewhat if we Isreal desire to stay in peavce in the area they might desire to start treating arabs in new way, and a minimum of with admire reason like it or no longer arabs will constantly be an element of " the state of Israel" , and that i've got faith by skill of the final Israeli stupid conflict they gave an incredibly huge favour to Hamas ( one hundred,000 British common repeating "we are all Hamas" ) with each and every of the Isreali commercial ability , there are nevertheless human beings on the west who knows Israeli is a state of crimes and masscares

Uh, none of the above.

Bush wanted to go down in history as "great" and thought waging war on a weak country would be his only shot at that.

Cheney wanted Halliburton to rake in the big bucks.

Rumsfeld wanted permanent bases in the MIddle East.

It wasn't about any of those other things.

Bush tell the TRUTH?!

You're a MADMAN!!!!!!!

LOL, Bush tell the truth. That's a good one. Hahaha.

His mommy told him that if he ever told the truth his lips would fall off.

So he never has and never will.

I never heard any one say anything about a hundred years. i approve of what is being done in Iraq. I thought you were on the right track with the title of your question, but apparently that was bait to bash the President. I would vote for him again.

I think its a little of all of the above, logic tells us that they are all issues that now must be dealt with. I prefer they be dealt with in the middle east, than my back yard, thank you very much.
