It dont matter what fish or what amount of water your tank contains you will still have to change some water on a regular basis.

Look at it this way, if you had a swimming pool outside and you went swimming in it everyday for the rest of your life however when you were in there, you didnt fancy getting out and going to the loo, how long do you think you could face swimming in there? how long you reckon you could confidently go in there and not catch something, now add the fact that your neighbour also use your pool and do the same now how do you fancy it.

There is nothing thats going to stop the pollution building up over a period your fish will continue to look healthy up until they die suddenly one by one as the pollution gets at them.

If you try to add replacements they will die almost instantly from the shock.

At least every two weeks do a partial water change.

I also have zebra danios (no platies or barbs though). I have found that if I change 10% or 1 gallon by simply siphoning out the water with a gravel vacuum, this seems to keep the water fresh, clear, and the whole group happy.

A warning though... because your fish are small, double check your bucket of siphoned out water carefully and make sure you haven't accidentally siphoned one of your fish! I have done this more than once and now I make it a habit to check before I dump the water out. You may want to put a screen over your siphon tube to prevent this from happening by taking some cheese cloth and rubber-banding it over the tube opening.

Have fun and enjoy that aquarium!

The only sub-tropical fish on your list are the white cloud mountain minnows. You could keep 5 at most, but I personally think a 5 gallon is far too small for such active little fish. I wouldn't keep them in any less than a 10 gallon tank. If you get a heater, a betta and some shrimp would be perfect in that tank. Those are the only things I can recommend for a tank that small.

yes, thats alot of fish for that tank size... i change my 10 gallon tanks once a week and i dont even have that many fish... but your fish are small, so you should change it every week or they will die pretty fast.... i know...
