I am a perfectionnist and it's always caused me problems.
At school, I could never finish my essays. I wanted it to be perfectly written. At work I am always late. Is it something curable?

I think a better word is dysfunctional. My sister is a perfectionist and she is completely unable to function in any social environment. She goes for long periods of time with no contact with the family and then when she does visit with us she is with drawn and aloof.

She has not had a job in over 30 years even though she has two Masters Degrees. She considers herself an intellectual and is constant upset because this that and the other is not what it "ought" to be. In actuality my IQ is higher than hers albeit only marginally so. The difference is being a perfectionist she has about Zero Emotional IQ. I on the other hand celebrate my flaws and love to engage people and be engaged.

Is it curable? I don't know. But I do expect it can be brought into the realm of managable if you work at it.

Perfectionism is not a diasbility, it is a quality. If it were a disability, soo many people would qualify as "disabled". Yes, it can get in the way sometimes, but it also means, that if you're doing something, you are going to get it done a lot better than anybody else! I'm a self-professed perfectionist myself, but I try to turn it into a good thing. When I'm finishing up at work (I'm in retail) I do take a bit longer than others, but I get it done a lot better (I even overheard the other day that my section of the store has never looked better).

Turn it into a good thing, because it is!

I know you want to do them perfectly. All you have to do is relax your standard and don't spend so much time planning dude! Anyway, perfectionism is not some kind of problem as it can be your strength as you can see the thing that other people can't. I suggest you to read Personality Plus by Florence Littauer.

Perfection is a disability when it causes you to feel dis-satisfaction with every facet of your life. It can turn obsessive compulsive like the people with eating disorders who imagine they are fat while they are dying of malnutrition.

If it is getting to big for you to handle, seek help....

If you are always late for work then you are not perfect. Just strive at being better.
