I am completely stumped on how to do the following probelm, could anyone enlighten me? I have to do tons of these problems, want to make sure I do them right:

If sin x = 0.5299 and cos x = 0.8481, than tan x = ?

sin(x) divided by cos(x) is tan(x)

so tan(x) = 0.5299/0.8481 = 0.6248

Sin is a/c and Cos is b/c REMEMBER?
tan is a/b. So its the answer of Sin, divided by the answer of Cos, equals the tan.

0.5299/0.8481
=0.6248

This will make things easier now, and as you progress mathematically:
Sin=SOH Cos=CAH Tan=TOA
Sine=Opposite/Hypotenuse
Cosine=Adjacent/Hypotenuse
Tangent=Opposite/Adjacent
The above mnemonic is easy to remember (just pronounce it like it looks), and these relationships and their derivatives will follow you in all the rest of your advanced math courses.

In any coordinate pair, say (3,5), x=3 and y=5, the sine is the y-coordinate, and the cosine is the x-coordinate. Because we also know that Tangent is Sine/Cosine, you can easily type these numbers into your calculator to come up with the correct decimal.

Also, reversing each of the above relationships will give you:
Secant=hypotenuse/opposite
Cosecant=hypotenuse/adjacent
Cotangent=adjacent/opposite
Sec=1/cosine; Csc=1/sine; Cot=1/tangent.

Tangent is sin over cos. So divide sin by cos to get tan =)

tan x = sin x / cos x = 0.5299 / 0.8481
tan x = 0.625
x = 32° (1st quadrant: sinx ,cosx ,tanx are +ve)
