Nortons is real, they are just experts with slick marketing skills, to get buyers to purchase a product that is a resource hog, finds little or nothing and if a virus is found, usually unable to remove. Plus when you go to remove you are left with 375 plus fragments glued to your files, folders, registry and hidden all over your system.\
I use state of the art technology that is light years ahead of any other antivirus program on the market. Comes from Beijing, China and you only pay a one time fee for life of $29.99 and you get all updates, new versions, background scananer, and a dynamic defense system, that catches zero day attacks in their tracks. Plus all compressed files with embedded trojans or viruses.

I used to be a junior executive in a small company that created Anti-virus software.
After operating for less than 5 years, we were forced to leave the industry because we could not compete with the likes of Norton and McAfee.
It has been a common rumor in the industry that these big companies don't just work to detect viruses but they also CREATE their own viruses so that people will buy their software and be protected from it. Since they created the virus, they would also be the first to have a solution and therefore be viewed as the safest software.
Very sad, but (probably) true.

Fake? Absolutely not.
They have the same problem as Microsoft has with Windows. They're the most popular, so they're the most targeted by people with bad intentions. As a result, Norton is often problemsome.
Fortunately for Microsoft, nobody has really made an OS on par. (Mac lovers shush, this isn't the place for that argument. You have a great OS for graphic design.)
Unfortunately for the folks at Norton, there are other viable options, as you point out. I love AVG personally.

Norton was a premier software package when Peter Norton developed an utilities suite of which antivirus was a part of. He was bought out by symantec and some think the quality fell off some. Symantec is the premier av software maker and many of the others use their av engine and most use their virus definitions.

Norton is target of hackers and virus creators beacsue it is just so popular and how fun to find a PC destroyed by virus, yet Norton running in it!
Try something that is not so popular, but reliable.... and it's AVAST! I think! O gosh...this antivirus is superb.

It's not a fake, but many believe it's not very good. However, I've never heard of panda, and McAfee is usually rated even lower. I hear good things about AVG though.

Norton Antivirus isn't fake, its just a terrible piece of software.
Go with Avast, it is so much better than Mcaffe, Panda, or AVG.

You know, sometimes, I wonder if the anti-virus software makers create some of the viruses themselves?
