That's too tough a question!
Michael was performing before his teens, whether he wanted to or not. Prince hit the scene with "When Doves Cry" in 1984 and never looked back.
If your definition of "Music Aritist" includes performance and show, then, I just have to say Michael Jackson! No one can defy gravity like he's always done.
I have a powerful, tremendous respect for Prince and his originality and purity of composition. If performance were left out, I'd call it a near tie. Otherwise, it's MJ all the way.

I believe that Michael Jackson is the better artist. He has been writing, producing and performing his music since he was a teenager. He has been performing even longer. Prince is gifted also, but he doesn't even come close to Michael Jackson.
All of you who have mentioned MJ's plastic surgery, or the legal charges, what does any of that have to do with the music?
BTW, the surgery was started after MJ was burned during the filming of a Pepsi commercial.
MJ was found innocent of the charges against him. Innuendo and gossip does not change that.

I love and respect both of these guys as artists, and as songwriters, but for credibility, it's Prince without a doubt.
