Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine is an excellent retelling of the Cinderella in a very different way.

I second the Tamora Pierce recommendation. Her books are awesome.

Robin McKinley's books are great too. I particularly like The Blue Sword and The Hero and the Crown.

There is also the Princess Diaries series by Meg Cabot. When I was 13, I also loved to read the Baby Sitter's Club series by Ann M. Martin. I haven't seen them in the stores recently, but I used to love them.

If you like Fantasy, Tamora Pierce has some excellent books for younger readers (though I really enjoy them as well)

'Song of the Lioness:
Alanna: The First Adventure
In the Hand of the Goddess
The Woman Who Rides Like a Man
Lioness Rampant

The Immortals:
Wild Magic
Wolf-Speaker
Emperor Mage
The Realms of the Gods

Protector of the Small:
First Test
Page
Squire
Lady Knight

I also recommend 'Catherine, Called Birdy', by Karen Cushman and 'Jacob Have I Loved', by Katherine Paterson.

Happy reading!

PS Many thanks to CheeseFancier, who clued me in to two authors I hadn't heard of before. Good fantasy is hard to find!

I just started reading a trilogy called The Sevenwaters Trilogy by Juliet Marillier. The books in order are Daughter of the Forest, Son of the Shadows, and Child of the Prophecy. They are fantasy books. I've only read the first book so far and thought it was very good, and there was a good bit of romance in it as well. The books are a bit long though, but if you have the time you should try it out! Good luck!

For fantasy you can't go past Raymond E Feist. He has dozens and every one of them will keep you on the edge of your seat. The first in that series is "Magician", which I am reading again now for the umpteenth time since I was 16 (a long long time ago!)
Also Robin Hobb is fantastic, read the Assassin series, I've read it several times and still love it.
Enjoy!

I just read "Something Borrowed" & "Something Blue" by Emily Giffin. It was a really good read. I read both books (300 plus pages) in a week. Great story about love, friendships, and maturity. Check out the web site it has experts from her books.

Wind on Fire Trilogy
Inheritance Trilogy
Lord of the Rings Trilogy
Dark Elf Trilogy
Bartimaeus Trilogy
Inkheart Trilogy
Ender Series

I dunno what it is with me and trilogies, but they're all excellent. They're all fantasy, so like Harry Potter, but I think if you like JK Rowling, you'll like all of these.
